Utah se confruntă cu o epidemie de rujeolă în expansiune rapidă

Un recent focar de rujeolă a cuprins statul Utah, având până acum 583 de cazuri confirmate, conform celor mai recente date furnizate de Utah Department of Health and Human Services. Epidemia a început într-o zonă izolată, dar se răspândește rapid, cu efecte vizibile chiar și în campusul Universității din Utah, unde a fost raportat un caz de rujeolă.

La sfârșitul lunii martie, un individ infectat cu rujeolă a fost pe campus timp de patru zile, determinând universitatea să recomande studenților să rămână acasă timp de 21 de zile dacă se simt rău sau nu sunt vaccinați. În ciuda riscurilor, studenta Hailey Perkins, vaccinată în copilărie, a declarat: “I was like, I don't really know what you change. I still have to go to class. So I was just like, ‘it is what it is.’”

Epidemia a început în colțul de sud-vest al statului, într-o comunitate unde rata de vaccinare este scăzută și unde rezidenții sunt asociați cu o sectă religioasă fundamentalistă. Dr. Leisha Nolen, epidemiolog de stat, a subliniat că “nu mai este limitată la niciun grup specific” și că focarul afectează diverse comunități din Utah.

Din februarie, au fost înregistrate expuneri la un turneu de wrestling la Utah Valley University și la Highland High School din Salt Lake City. Statisticile arată că 83% din cazurile confirmate sunt în rândul persoanelor nevaccinate, iar copiii sunt afectați de aproape două ori mai mult decât adulții. Dr. Nolen a precizat că doar obiectivitatea a surprins severitatea cazurilor observate: “A lot of the providers talk about these teenagers who come in and just look horrible.”

Rujeola este deosebit de periculoasă pentru copiii sub 5 ani și pentru persoanele cu sisteme imunitare slăbite, potențialele complicații incluzând febră, pneumonie sau edem cerebral. În 2025, au fost raportate trei decese din cauza rujeolei în întreaga țară, o boală care fusese declarată eliminată în SUA din 2000.
